I thought I should update everyone on the recent events. Physically everyone is fine but we’re all just a little shaken up over the tornadoes that ripped through the area. We’re all grateful to still have our health. It was pretty scary to be huddled in that corner hearing what was going on around us. With that said, financially everything is a mess. It’s embarrassing to admit I’ve owned a home for thirty years and never had insurance for it. Once things have calmed down we’re going to have to declare bankruptcy. I’m sharing this because I’m hoping it will get all of you to really look at your own situations. You just never know when something like this is going to happen. If we can prevent one of our loved ones from experiencing the same thing then something positive will have come out of the loss. I think this whole experience has really opened our eyes and hopefully it will do the same for all of you. Now that the major turmoil has passed we’re trying to salvage what we can of our belongings. Everyone in the community has been really supportive of one another. We’re looking forward to moving on with things!

Things are definitely going to change around here. I spent the entire morning balancing my checkbooks and getting my financial records in order and it occurred to me that I’m really not earning enough money. Between the no insurance diabetic supplies and the miscellaneous, surprise expenses and repairs I’ve had this year, I realized that I’m just barely scraping by! Just to be sure, I prepared some budget sheets and wrote down all of my expenses and income and, sure enough, it showed that I’ve been consistently spending more than I’m making! I think that just shocked me. I’ve never kept a budget before, but I think it’s clear I need to start. I guess, in your mind, it’s really easy
to think everything is going well, but when you actually see it written down on paper it’s another story! I had gathered up all my receipts and I’d forgotten about all the meals I’d eaten out and all the times I paid ATM fees just to be able to get ten or twenty dollars. Then my car needed all these little repairs. All the receipts were there to remind me though! I feel lucky that I realized this now so I can stop wasting money and start putting it toward all the trips I want to go on!

My friend Robbie just got a job selling glucose test supplies. He was a science in college when we were at Indiana University, but after his father passed away while we were sophomores, Robbie decided that he no longer wanted to become a doctor. He graduated with a degree in biology, and went to work for his uncle doing laboratory research at a hospital. He had worked there a few summers during college, so he was familiar with the work that they did there, and knew a lot of the people. It was while he was working in the lab, that Robbie decided that he wanted to go into the field of medical supply sales. In order for him to be able to do that, he needed to at least get some sales experience first. The first sales job he got was selling office supplies. He ended up being pretty good at it, and made a good amount of money doing it. That is how he was able to get his first job in the field of medical supply sales. He gained the sales experience, and was able to get good references, and so when he applied for the glucose test supplies sales job, he got it.

I’ve decided that before I move forward with the Lasik surgery, I will look into how this will impact my pocketbook. I do spend quite a bit of money on eye glasses and contact lenses. The reason I have such a high cost for my eye glasses is not because I go out and buy the most expensive ones there are on the market, even though I do try to get a nice looking frame that will compliment my face. The reason is that I lose so many pairs of glasses. I am going to try and see how the Lasik cost will differ from the eye glasses and contact lenses cost. I am wondering if it will all even out in the end. Maybe the amount I will end up paying for the Lasik surgery and all the follow ups and also what I’m likely to pay if something goes wrong that is not covered under the initial visit, will be comparable to me buying multiple pairs of glasses over a year’s time. Not only do I buy multiple pairs of glasses, I must admit I also have been known to either loose a contact lenses, or damage it somehow.

The phone conversation with my Auntie shed a whole different light on how I am feeling about this whole thing. I am really not comfortable enough yet with getting the surgery done on my eyes. I keep feeling like something could go wrong and I would be blind and regret it the rest of my days. My Auntie pointed out that I really needed to be completely comfortable about it before I considered Lasik eye surgery at all. She wants me to actively go out there and talk to the surgeon who was recommended to me by my friend. My friend had this surgery about five years ago, and is so extremely happy with it. I found out that she also was a blinker when it comes to something passing near her eyes. But that did not deter her. My friend was really, really sure she wanted to do this. I guess I will be doing more research into this surgery now. I have gotten motivated and now think I can do this, and I want to do this. I don’t want to have to worry about buying glasses all my life. I don’t know what will happen down the road.

I asked my brother if he knew anything about DSC security. I’m going to have to install a new unit in my place. The one that’s here is a bit outdated. Anyways, he said they were really good so that’s whom I’m going to go with. I wish his advice about relationships was as good as his advice about that! I’ve got some major decisions to make when it comes to this current relationship. I don’t know whether things are really progressing how I would like. My brother hasn’t really been in any relationships as serious as this one so that’s why I can’t ask him anything. He just wouldn’t know. It’s one of those tough things. We have a lot in common, I just don’t know if she’s really that one person I could see spending the rest of my life with. I guess all we can do is keep spending time with each other. She’s really nice but I feel that our paths may be taking us in different directions. I can’t really place my finger on what’s off about it, but something is. I’m starting to wish I had as good of a feeling about the relationship as I do about the DSC security system. Ha!

While we were browsing in the shop called Back to Nature’s Way, in the town that’s just minutes from my brother-in-laws vacation home, we found that we were indeed spending money on things we never thought of before. We brought some natural stone ground wheat flour and got treated to some really great recipes to go with it. We even brought a couple of shawls that were made from hand-spun yarn. We even came across some hair loss shampoos that are supposed to work wonders on your hair. Of course, we are going to try it the first chance we get. Maybe it will restore some of our shedding locks, which seems to have become an issue of late. We are just enjoying our outings a lot lately and it seems we are always game to go visit the specialty shops. We have just about adopted this place as our home away from home. And, with my brother-in-law so close at hand, we have the perfect excuse. We have even started to collect company on our little outings to town. A lot of our relatives are beginning to become interested in where we find all the nice things we bring back from our shopping trips.

How many people actually use organizers to keep track of all their things? Do kids ever bother? I haven’t seen one carrying around a trapper keeper in years. In fact, I haven’t seen a trapper keeper in years either. So what is the point to a kids organizer? When I was a child and in elementary school, they gave us these little green assignment notebooks. They listed all our subjects on every page and we were supposed to list all our homework and upcoming projects and everything else in it. Within a month of receiving mine, the spirals had all been twisted out, the corners were upturned, and more than a few pages were ripped out. I barely ever wrote down my homework assignments in there. I was in elementary school. I barely had any homework at all. Most of the time, I drew odd faces in my assignment notebook. Evil smiles, sad clowns, my dog’s head, and a planet that grew two legs and walked around. Yeah, I know. I was a weird kid, but I still wouldn’t have found a use for a kids organizer. Kids just aren’t that organized, but they can keep track of everything important enough up in their heads. That’s how I did it.

My friend Barry just got Lasik in Boston. I’m jumbling up my words here. Barry, my friend in Boston, just got Lasik eye surgery done on him. Not Barry got Lasik in Boston. I’m happy for him. He had been talking about getting the procedure done for years and years. He didn’t wear any thick glasses or anything. In fact, he wore contacts that made his eyes look blue. They are actually green, but he wanted blue contacts for whatever reason. Anyway, the surgery fixed up his eyes and he doesn’t need the contacts anymore. That means his eyes always look green now, but I haven’t mentioned that to him. I don’t think anyone else has either. He certainly hasn’t mentioned anything about green eyes or blue eyes to me. He thought he looked much better with blue eyes than green and that they went better with his red hair. I disagreed. I think the green eyes go much better with his red hair, but he never listened to me. Maybe since he got his laser eye surgery done he’s realized that. He is probably seeing better now, even when he’s looking at himself in a mirror. Or at least, I hope so.
